Living Organ Donor Kidney Transplant Living Organ Donor Liver Transplant
Seeking a life-saving kidney transplant
Living organ donation can significantly shorten wait times for patients, and for those with renal failure, it can have life-saving results. With over 100,000 patients currently on the wait-list for a kidney transplant in the United States, finding a donor represents the primary challenge of transplantation.
Who qualifies as a living kidney donor?
A living organ donor can be a relative, friend or simply an altruistic stranger. All donors can remain anonymous, if they so choose. If a patient doesn’t have a living organ donor but would like to find one, our team can assist with outreach efforts. Montefiore Einstein also participates in a kidney-paired exchange program through the National Kidney Registry, which helps patients with healthy but incompatible donors swap with others to find a match.
Why Montefiore Einstein
Montefiore Einstein has been pioneering kidney transplantation since 1963. As one of the largest kidney-transplant programs in New York City, we work continuously to implement innovative strategies, even in the most challenging cases. We are dedicated to ensuring each patient’s transplant happens in a timely manner and with the best possible outcomes.
Why transplant
Once a kidney begins to fail, it typically doesn’t recover. In most cases, the best solution is to replace the failing kidney with a new one. Kidney transplantation replaces all the lost functions of the failed kidney and restores balance to impacted body parts, such as the heart and bone marrow. That offers significant improvement to a patient’s overall health and life expectancy, as well as their quality of life. Following surgery, transplant patients have the opportunity to resume their normal routines and return to doing the things they love.
Kidney transplant evaluation
Patients undergo a comprehensive evaluation of their kidney and overall health to determine whether they’ll benefit from transplant. The transplant evaluation team also analyzes the patient’s psychosocial health to ensure they have a reliable support system, which is an integral component in the recovery process. A nurse coordinator assists each patient while they navigate the evaluation process, which includes a series of blood tests and imaging, cancer and cardiac screenings, and other tests that help determine the patient’s candidacy for transplant.
Our success rate
Our kidney transplant program was one of the first in the world. Today, we’re known for our extremely high (95%) success rate and some of the shortest wait times in the country.
Finding a living kidney donor
There are currently hundreds of Montefiore-Einstein patients on the waiting list for a life-saving organ. The wait can be long, but increased access to living organ donor transplants can change that. Living organ donor transplants allow patients to receive a transplant sooner, lead to better outcomes and, most importantly, save lives. Sharing your story is one of the most important steps toward finding a living organ donor. If you’d like suggestions for the best ways to connect with potential living organ donors, please reach out to a member of our team at transplant@montefiore.org.
Seeking a life-saving liver transplant
Over 13,000 people in the United States are currently waiting for a liver transplant. Donation from a live donor can significantly shorten a recipient's wait time and have life-saving results. In living organ donation, part of the donor’s liver is removed and used to replace the patient's diseased liver. With time, both the patient's transplanted liver and the donor's remaining liver grow back to full size.
Among the highest ranking in the nation for living organ donor transplants, the success record of Montefiore Einstein Center for Transplantation attracts patients from all over the world. Liver transplant candidates come to us for superior treatment, cutting-edge technologies and compassionate care.
Why transplant
In some cases, end-stage liver failure or cancer can lead to limited treatment options and reduced life expectancy. For those patients, a liver transplant, sourced from a live or deceased donor, may represent the best possible option. Following surgery, patients are given the opportunity to lead normal, physically active lives.
Liver transplant evaluation
Patients have the convenience of visiting one of several locations for evaluation. The initial liver transplant evaluation involves a series of tests, imaging and blood work. During this time, patients and their families get support from a team of experts that includes a nutritionist, social worker and financial counselor. Within 10 days of a completed evaluation, our doctors determine whether or not a patient is a candidate, or if more testing is required before a decision can be made.
